Bhopal girl Noor jahan, who aspired to be an MBBS doctor changed her mind after realising the significance of physiotherapy in treating patients without undergoing any surgical procedure.

The field is steadily gaining popularity in India as well as around the world because it provides the first line of treatment and can relieve pains and problems without any medication or surgical procedures. Physiotherapy serves as a great non medical alternative to treat lots of issues. We can sense that there has been a shift in the belief system and nowadays people prefer going for non invasive and non surgical options, especially elderly people.

Despite being a significant field, the sector is still facing apathy of the government. An absence of a central council to regulate the institutions offering physiotherapy programmes has led to the dilution of the quality.

The setting up of a governing body on the lines of MCI,the Dental council of India (DCI) will help maintain the quality of education,infrastructure.A regulatory body will also be beneficial for fee regulation and taking care of job opportunities.

As compared to India, those who are gaining expertise in this field an explore career opportunities in foreign countries due to better awareness about the significance of physiotherapy. Its importance cannot be ruled out in treating patients with lifestyle disorders and helping them maintaining fitness. Despite being a key field in the medical stream, its still a part of the Orthopaedic department in a hospital. Instead of working under it,a separate department needs to be created in hospitals for physiotherapy.
